      The Ottchil Artwork (Lacquer Painting)

On the paintings created by the artist Kim Jeong-jwa, a wide variety of subject matters are given life, including cows, harbors, scenery, camellia trees and flowers, waterfalls, or cranes. However, there are two common aspects across all her works: One, the “importance of the happiness of daily life, which cannot be traded with anything else”, and the fact that they are all “Ottchil Artworks”. The profound taste and style of Ottchil has been well known from the old times; its unique beauty is known to become even greater with time, thus giving life to the phrase, “Cheon-nyeon Ottchil (Ottchil Artwork lasting for over thousand years)”. The city of Tongyeong, in particular, is famous for the craftsmanship for lacquerware inlaid with mother-of-pearl, or Na-jeon-chil-gi(螺鈿漆器) in Korean. It is because the shapes and colors of the shells of abalones, conches, and clams are splendid and luxurious.
The artist Kim Jeong-jwa attempts to the convey unique values of her hometown Tongyeong through her works. She is loyal to her “instinctive passion and desire” to capture the beautiful nature of Tongyeong in her art. In that sense, her history of having majored in Geonchil (dried lacquer) in the Department of Artistic Crafts at university became a valuable asset for her. In addition, she continuously studied watercolor as well as oil paintings from the year 2000, which led to her overcoming the limitations of the Ottchil artwork in its pictorial expressions, and creating the original “Ottchil Painting” of her own. The combination of the art of Na-jeon-chil-gi artwork in Tongyeong as the base and a variety of materials (mother-of-pearl, eggshell, tofu, gold leaf, gold powder, silver leaf, silver powder, and many others) has given birth to the artwork that not only contains the unique gloss and decorative beauty but also the preservability and antibiotic effect.
